PC running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit.

Office 2003 installed with the 2007 compatibility pack.

.XLS files can be opened, modified and saved.

.XLSX files can be opened, modified and saved. There is an additional
conversion phase which takes a second or two on opening.

BUT - on closing sometimes there are temporary files left in the same
directory. This only happens for .XLSX files - i.e. those that require
conversion. For an original file called "File.xlsx" the temporary
filename is of the form "File~RF<random_characters>.tmp"

Where the original file is held on the local machine (in "My Documents")
a modified file is saved without leaving behind a .TMP file.

Where the original file is held on a networked server, on close the .TMP
file remains on the server.

This is true for the user, and for the Domain Administrator account, so
the problem is not caused by improper permissions.

It is not caused by AVG as suggested by Googling - disabling AVG does
not remove the problem.

I have tried disabling the Excel auto-save; no improvement.

An exactly similar PC - also Windows 7 Pro 64-bit with Office 2003
installed and the 2007 compatibility pack - does NOT show the problem.

So the problem is local to one specific PC. Any ideas how to resolve it?

I just saw this post. If you are still casting around for a solution see:
